Everything in the Bible points to Christ and the Gospel, even what is written in the Old Testament.
We can see this in Luke 24:44 -
….“These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.”
In the next 3 posts, we’ll look at Christ in Song of Solomon. We know that Song of Solomon is about human love between a man and woman. But, we all can agree that the Bible is about Jesus Christ, Salvation, and the Gospel.
Marriage and the marriage metaphor is used in the Bible to convey the message of the Gospel. Sinners are viewed as those who broke the marriage covenant. As seen in the books of Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Hosea, they are spoken of as prostitutes.
Christ is viewed as the heavenly bridegroom, our husband. The church is viewed as Christ’s bride. The cross is the bride price. Christ loved the church and gave His life for her.
This is seen in John 15:13 -
Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.
Song of Solomon is a human love story, but like all of Scripture, it points to the Divine love story.
From heaven, He came and sought her to be His holy bride. With His own blood, He bought her and for her life He died.
Song of Solomon also celebrates pleasure between man and woman and endorses desire. How does this point us to Christ and the Gospel?
The scripture commands us, as the bride of Christ, to anxiously await our bridegroom’s, Christ’s, appearance, the consummation of the marriage, and the marriage feast.
This is seen in Revelation 19:5-8 -
Then a voice came from the throne, saying, “Praise our God, all you His servants and those who fear Him, both small and great!”
And I heard, as it were, the voice of a great multitude, as the sound of many waters and as the sound of mighty thunderings, saying, “Alleluia! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns!
Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.”
And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.
God instituted pleasure in marriage and He intends for us to embrace it. But even more than that, we should be looking forward to the marriage of the Lamb.
As seen in Psalm 16:11 -
…In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
In His presence is sheer ecstasy and eternal pleasure. Christians should anticipate the return of Christ the same way a newly engaged couple anticipates their union.
