Hebrews 13:5,6
Hebrews 13:5,6 - Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave nor forsake you.” So we may boldly say: “The LORD is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?”
What does it mean to be content? To answer that we must first look at the meaning of the word, content. In this passage, the word content is an adjective. The Cambridge Dictionary defines it as ‘pleased with your situation and not hoping for change or improvement’.
Now to be content in all things of your life is a very tall order, especially considering the modern age and culture. From childhood, we’re taught to strive for more. We’re taught to desire the biggest and best of everything, whether that’s in material possession (like a home or car), or in our social standing (job title or education).
I’m not saying that the desire to do better is wrong. Take note, that’s not what the Word of God says either. It says do not be covetous or greedy. All our desires cannot be for monetary benefit or material blessings. Our desires must be focused on God and His kingdom. We cannot take our wealth with us when we die. A coffin isn’t attached to a U-Haul. We must be happy with what we have. If you only have $5 to your name, be happy with that. If you have $5 million, be happy with that. Don’t spend your life chasing wealth and material possessions. We must keep our reliance totally on God.
He will not leave us or forsake us. He will be with us when we have nothing and He will be with us when we have much. He is always with us, what more should we want? Our wealth can be taken away, our health reduced to nothing, and the whole world may turn away from us, but we can boldly say that our God in Heaven is with us.
