Moses’ 5 Excuses - Inadequacy

INADEQUACY

This is part 4 in the series regarding the 5 excuses that Moses gave throughout his life.  These include identity, ignorance, unbelief, inadequacy, and unavailability.

In this post, we’ll discuss inadequacy.  Check out the first 3 posts in the series.

Moses’ Excuse: Exodus 4:10 – Then Moses said to the Lord, “O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither before nor since You have spoken to Your servant; but I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.”

  • Moses had a speech impediment.  We don’t know for certain what exactly it was, but we know that it hindered him.  He doubted his ability to lead the people with his disability.

God’s Solution: (vs. 11 - 12) So the Lord said unto him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes the mute, the deaf, the seeing, or the blind?  Have not I, the Lord? Now therefore, go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall say.”

  • God made us uniquely as individuals.  He made us with all the bumps and flaws that we have.  He knows the thorns in our sides.  He placed them there for a specific purpose.  God knew that Moses had a speech problem, but God would have used that speech problem for His glory to lead the children of Israel out of bondage in Egypt.

Application: God can take our problems and use them for His glory.

  • Our problems and disabilities are not a problem in God’s sight.  He made us and can use us in any way necessary for His glory.  God used Fanny Crosby, a blind woman in America, to write most of the hymns we sing today.

Let us examine ourselves!

  • Are we giving God excuses when He wants to use us for His plans and purposes?

  • Do we have doubts of our own self-worth, or are we really doubting God?

  • Are our excuses just a way to say that we are not available to answer His call?
