God doesn’t tout physical beauty as real value when it comes to women. The Word of God shows that the real value is virtue.
What is virtue? The Merriam-Webster definition is the conformity to a standard of right. But, what does it mean for a woman and a wife? The whole list is detailed in Proverbs 31: 10-31. While women can use this as a guideline of attributes to adapt, men can use this as a check-list for your future spouse.
(vs. 10) A virtuous woman is precious, not cheap. It is desirable to be virtuous because you are worth more than precious stones.
(vs. 11, 12) A wife has her husband’s trust and she brings him ‘gain’. She doesn’t add to his sorrows or grief but adds to his successes. She isn’t a burden but acts for his good.
(vs. 13-16) This woman is willing to work. She provides food for her family. She wakes up early and she isn’t lazy. She provides for others outside of her immediate family (mentioned, her maidservants). She is entrepreneurial and not only thinks about the future but takes steps to ensure it.
(vs. 17-20) She is both physically strong and strong in character. She purchases quality items for the home. She is compassionate and cares for the poor and needy.
(vs. 21-23) The virtuous woman is blessed by God in the following ways. Her family is prepared for winter. Her clothing is rich. Her husband is known and respected by others.
(vs. 24-28) The hardworking and diligent nature of the woman is emphasized again here. She is not idle but keeps busy watching over her family. Her children and husband consider her blessed. They are happy to have her as mother and wife.
(vs. 29-31) Outer beauty and personality will fade. So the woman who fears God should be praised because that is the only thing that will last.
