Spiritual Senses - SIGHT

Hebrews 5:12-14

For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who through use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

The author of Hebrews is saying that the Christians here should be more mature than they were.  They received the “milk”, the principles and foundations of the faith.  But, they were supposed to now be at the phase of eating “solid food”.  Those who have been Christians for a while should be skilled in the word of righteousness.  Their senses should be exercised to discern both good and evil.  Exercised means that the believer is using their senses to discern what is right and wrong.  

When we hear the word “senses”, the first thing we think of is the 5 physical human senses.  But, there are also spiritual counterparts to these senses.  In the next few posts, we’ll discuss our spiritual senses - Taste, Hearing, Sight, Smell, Touch.

SIGHT

In this post, we’ll discuss the sense of sight.  The English word see comes from the Old English word ‘seon’, which is derived from Germanic.  This word means to see, look, behold, observe, perceive, understand, experience, visit, or inspect.  It was also used in Middle English to mean ‘behold in the imagination or in a dream’.  

Let’s look at some Bible verses that deal with the sense of sight.  

Psalm 119:18 - Open my eyes, that I may see Wondrous things from Your law.

Ephesians 1:18 - the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, 

2 Corinthians 4:18 - while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen.  For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

The physical sense of sight allows us to see what’s in front of us.  Our spiritual sense of sight allows us to see the eternal perspective.  With our spiritual eyes, we are able to see the revelations of God through His word and experience it in our lives.  We will be enlightened to understanding God’s plan and purpose in our lives.  We need spiritual sight so that we are not deceived by the world.  

We need to maintain our spiritual sight by immersing ourselves in God’s word and drawing closer to Him in prayer.  We should also focus our sight on the things above.  As it is mentioned in 2 Corinthians 4:18, we should look at what is invisible to the world today and focus on what is eternal.
