What does God call an Abomination - Part 1

What does God call an Abomination?

In this 3 part series, we’ll go through what the Bible says about certain topics through specific verses and discuss their meanings.  There are several things that God specifically calls out as being an abomination to Him and it is important for us to know what those are.

This post will cover cross-dressing, dishonesty, and double standards.

CROSS-DRESSING

Deuteronomy 22:5 - A woman shall not wear anything that pertains to a man, nor shall a man put on a woman’s garment, for all who do so are an abomination to the Lord your God.

  • In the Old Testament, the clothing for both men and women were somewhat similar, such as long robes and wrappings.  Even so, there were clear distinctions in both men and women’s clothing.  God commands His people to respect those differences. This is especially important in the modern world where gender bending is much more common.

  • This command was given to God’s people for several reasons.  The first was because cross-dressing was a sign of paganism and idol worship.  Another reason is because it undermines God’s specific design for 2 genders - male and female.

  • This verse is not specific just to clothing.  It also pertains to any ornaments or items that are specific to a gender.  Men should not try to appear as women, and women should not try to appear as men.

DISHONESTY

Proverbs 20:23 - Diverse weights are an abomination to the Lord, And dishonest scales are not good.

  • God is righteous in all His measurements, therefore dishonesty is an abomination to Him.  The Bible says that the love of money is the root of all evil.  The dishonest weights and scales are the beginning of that sin.  It starts with dishonest business dealings and theft.

DOUBLE STANDARDS

Proverbs 20:10 - Diverse weights and diverse measures, They are both alike, an abomination to the Lord.

  • Diverse weights and measures are also considered abominations to the Lord.  The weights and measures should be consistent.  This goes hand-in-hand with God’s hatred of dishonesty.  God desires that His children will conduct their business fairly.  By using ‘diverse’ weights and measures, both the buyer and seller are cheated out of money.
