Luke 6: 33-35
Luke 6: 33-35 - And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive back, what credit is that to you? For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back. But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. Therefore be merciful, just as you Father also is merciful.
Doing good to those who are good to you doesn’t show Christian love or devotion. Unbelievers will do the same thing. We are called to be different from the world.
I know that is a hard task. When people hurt us, our first reaction is to strike back. That’s not what we’re called to do. We are called to be separated from the world and act as a light to others. How can we shine before others if we act the same way they do? How can we show God’s power and grace if we respond like they do?
We have to love our enemies. God’s word says enemies, not those whom we dislike, not those who annoy us, not those who are mere acquaintances. Enemies, that means someone who is actively opposed or hostile towards us. We have to love them, care for them, show them affection. We have to do good, give to others selflessly, without expecting anything in return.
If we do this, then we will receive a reward from God. We will be considered His children. Since God showed grace and mercy to us who were sinful and unworthy, how much more should we extend that to others?
